Through Local Sustainability Weeks, we promote sustainability at Swiss higher education institutions and among the wider public. Since 2013, the project is growing from a small student initiative to an international student network for sustainability.
We pursue three core activities with the Sustainability Weeks:
- We build local, national and international student networks for sustainability.
- In a dialogue with our universities, we encourage our institutions to commit to more sustainability, for example in teaching or in the cafeterias.
- During the local Sustainability Weeks, we organise public and free events on sustainability.
A local sustainability week consists of at least three events for one week, which serve to raise awareness for sustainability. The three colours in our logo symbolise the three areas of sustainability: the environment, society and the economy, which build on each other. The formats of the events are very diverse, for example, there are lectures, panel discussions, excursions, film screenings or workshops.
In 2013, a small group of students held the first Sustainability Week in Zurich, where they sparked great interest. Since then, the project has grown every year. In spring 2018, the Sustainability Week was held nationally for the first time. In 2020, international Sustainability Weeks will be held for the first time, for example in Ghana, Germany or Kazakhstan.
Universities are an ideal place to raise awareness for sustainability because they educate future generations. Through our activities, we bring sustainability into all areas of universities, such as management, research or teaching. Today, there are local sustainability weeks in Basel, Bern, Chur, Fribourg, Geneva, Lausanne, Locarno, Lucerne, Lugano, Neuchâtel, Rapperswil, St. Gallen, Crans Montana, Windisch, Zurich and even in other countries. This is only possible thanks to the efforts of over 400 volunteer students. Get in touch with us and join in!
«I am involved in the Sustainability Weeks because it gives me the opportunity to work on a common passion along with wonderful people. Over the years, I have learned a lot and gained valuable friendships.» Dario Siegen, core-team member of the Sustainability Week Switzerland and fellow of the Swiss Study Foundation (email@example.com).
