In recent years, digital technologies are profoundly renewing the ways of defining, collecting and promoting tangible and intangible heritage, to such an extent that engineers and other scientists now have a decisive role to play in building the future of memory and heritage.
Do you want to take part in a great Digital Humanities opportunity? The Swiss Study Foundation’s beneficiaries are eligible to register to the Hackathon for the Montreux Jazz Memories!
The Humanities Computing Department of the University of Lausanne, in collaboration with the EPFL Cultural Heritage & Innovation Center and EPFL College of Humanities, organize a Code Hackathon to exploit the collection and enhancement of the memory of the Montreux Jazz Festival community through a public and digital history project (“Montreux Jazz Memories”). The following link provide you with more information.
Goals
The challenge aims at making use of algorithms to mine the interviews of Montreux Jazz Memories. You must be able to leverage data through algorithms to extract valuable and structured information. You should consider different application possibilities such as (but not limited to):
- automatic emotion detection
- automatic enhancement of transcripts
- automatic extraction of anecdotes
The main goal is to provide the user with an output capable of emphasizing the cultural heritage of the data by means of the support of automatic methods for the generation of useful and relevant information.

Technical information and prerequisites about Data & Infrastructure and collaborative work
The data are the transcripts of interviews made by different protagonists of the Montreux Jazz Festival during all these years. The data are transcribed in Json format and will be freely accessible during the hackathon.
Programming language to be able to deal with this data must imperatively be Python. The project team expect each group member to have a good knowledge of python programming.
The project team suggest using PyCharm Pro or VSCode for collaborative programming.
Please have a look at:
- VSCode: https://code.visualstudio.com/learn/collaboration/live-share
- PyCharm Pro: Look at https://www.jetbrains.com/code-with-me/
The project team expect each group member to know how to use one of two solutions for collaborative coding and that each participants is equipped with a personal laptop. Each group member is expected to have a strong aptitude for collaborative teamwork.
