Food security exists when all people, at all times, have access to sufficient and affordable food that meets their needs for an active and healthy life. But this isn’t the case for all. Despite international efforts, 870 million people are still hungry today. Soaring food prices, climate change, water and energy shortages, and the lack of adequate infrastructure can endanger our highly vulnerable global food system.
This year’s Academia Engelberg conference takes stock of the global food supply chain, presents new food production technologies and looks toward the future and how food security needs to adapt to a fast-growing population. Representatives from the industry, the applied sciences, as well as developmental organizations will examine the topic from different viewpoints.
The Swiss Study Foundation is happy to partner up with the Academia Engelberg Foundation once again to enable interested students to participate at the 2014 conference. Students from the Swiss Study Foundation are supposed to participate in an active way at the conference; there are three different possibilities:
A) Student reporters, who will write short summaries of the three different conference days for the Academia Engelberg blog or tweet live from the conference. This kind of involvement is open to Bachelor students; 2-3 students needed.
B) Students, who will reflect upon the presentations of the different conference days at the end of each day in a plenary session. This kind of involvement is open to more advanced students, particularly Master and PhD students; 6-8 students needed.
C) Student rapporteurs, who will present a summary of the conference on Thursday, October 30, 2014, at Herrenhaus in Grafenort (11h30-14h15). Open to students of all levels; 2-3 students needed.
Costs for board and lodging for the duration of this seminar will be paid for by the organizers.
Number of Participants: At least 10 students from the Swiss Study Foundation.

If you’d like to reflect upon the different conference days in the plenary session (activity B), please indicate which conference day (Wednesday, Thursday or Friday) you prefer.
The conference begins on October 15, 2014, but an information session at Herrenhaus Grafenort on October 14, 2014, (starting at 9.45am) is being offered for all students participating at the conference, and we expect students from the Swiss Study Foundation to join in at this event.
