Audiences around the world continue to love mega-events like the Olympics or the Football World Cups, despite their long histories of damage to host cities, societies, and natural environments. But what exactly are mega-events, why do they matter, and how can they be improved?
In this talk, Prof. Sven Daniel Wolfe introduces some of the potential benefits and the problems associated with the world’s most spectacular events. Based on over a decade of research from host cities around the globe, Prof. Wolfe explores mega-event sustainability, (geo)politics, and suggests some ways that we might make Games that are less damaging and more beneficial for all.
