In recent years, microplastics have received widespread media attention and evoked global concern. What do we really know about their environmental impact, and how should we approach this issue?
Microplastics, tiny plastic particles (< 5 mm), have been the subject of intensive research for the last twenty years to understand their environmental risks. Today, we know that microplastics are ubiquitously found in many ecosystems and organisms, from urban centers to the most remote and isolated places on Earth. Due to the continued use (and mismanagement) of plastics, the burdens of microplastics in the environment is continually increasing – but what precisely is the problem and how can we stop it? In this event, we will explore the latest research findings on the fate, transport and impacts of microplastics and provide insights into environmental policy aspects surrounding the plastics issue.
