Frontiers in Nature and Technology
What is our relationship with the natural environment in the 21st century? How has technology influenced the way we interact with our biosphere? How will society shape nature in the future? And is there anything like a “natural” environment at all?
We would like to take a weekend off to talk about these ideas and their implications on society. In the beautiful setting of Maloja, we will be discussing topics as broad as: medical progress, genetic engineering, technological progress and its impact on human behavior, social science’s impact on technological progress, responsibility of researchers, human enhancement, rationality and much more.
Philosophy Salon festivals are retreats that reconnect participants to nature, stimulate the intellect and catalyze new friendships in beautiful locations around the world. They include a conversation topic, one or more speakers with specialized knowledge of the topic, a “conversation menu” to stimulate discussion, and loosely moderated debates among new friends. Speakers come from various fields, including academia, politics, the arts, technology and entrepreneurship.
Through this event, we would like to strengthen community by revitalizing the art of conversation across cultural barriers, fostering the exchange of ideas and meaningful social interaction in physical space. In the spirit of the ancient Greek agora and the Enlightenment salons, we organize philosophy salons and other thought provoking events to actively engage citizens in critical issues shaping society, culture and politics.

We would like to enable interested students and Ph.D. students to participate at this weekend. The participation is depending on active engagement in the event.
Please indicate your motivation for this event under motivation. If you are interested in hosting a small salon, which includes leading a discussion of about 5-10 participants for 1-2 h to a freely chosen topic, please indicate so in motivation. All types of ideas, interesting approaches and also physical activities (e.g. singing, yoga, outdoor activities) are encouraged.
Number of participants: A maximum of 25 participants from the Swiss Study Foundation.
